On 18 September, Maxim Kulkov shared the secrets of oral persuasion in the courtroom at the XI ABA Conference in Moscow

KK&P Managing Partner Maxim Kulkov spoke at the Making your case: Practical tips on oral persuasion and advocacy session at the XI Annual Conference of the American Bar Association on the Resolution of CIS-Related Business Disputes. The topic raised by Maxim was devoted to dealing with difficult opponents in court proceedings, including what to do if the opponent’s representatives go beyond their allotted speaking time, or you get interrupted or are addressed in an openly rude manner in the courtroom.

The session followed on from last year’s Soft Skills session, included in the programme of the X ABA conference in 2018. The session explored a lawyer’s practical skills in oral advocacy in a courtroom, something in high demand from recognised litigation professionals. These are the kinds of competencies that cannot be learnt from books.

Together with Maxim Kulkov, the session included the following speakers:

  • Rupert D’Cruz, Littleton Chambers, London, UK;
  • William Phillips, Covington & Burling, New York, USA; and
  • Huawei Sun, Zhong Lun, Beijing, China.
